What is autonomy?

Autonomy is the freedom to think and act without external control. It is derived from the Greek words autós (self) + nomos (law), meaning ‘self-law’. Autonomous people are empowered to act and decide independently within a set framework.

When you apply this freedom and control to the workplace, autonomy can give you a lot. For starters, a good dose of satisfaction. #1 Making your own decisions: As a project manager, you have the freedom to make your own decisions. No consultation or approval from your client is required. You get full ownership and are accountable for the results achieved.

#2 Control of your own working day: Do you get to organise your day in a way that works best for you? Good for you! Start the day with a run, for example, or take regular breaks to clear your head and focus on a new task. Are you sharp in the morning? Or is it better to schedule meetings for the afternoon? Organising your own day will increase your productivity and efficiency.

#3 Thinking outside the box: Autonomous employees often think outside the box to find new solutions. They can explore new ideas without fear of disapproval because they are not dependent on their manager’s opinion. This encourages creativity and fresh thinking, which improves products and strategies.

How to become an autonomous professional

What can you do to become more autonomous? This will definitely help:
1. Start taking on more responsibility at work. This will show your boss that you are capable of taking on more complex tasks.
2. Speak up when you have an idea or suggestion. This is an important part of becoming more independent.
