6 Communication skills you need to start using now!

You might not be looking for yet another to-do list. But what if we told you that these communication skills could make you far more effective in the future?

You might not be looking for yet another to-do list. But what if we told you that these communication skills could make you far more effective in the future? That they could help you build stronger relationships, both at work and in your personal life? This list is worth your time!

Many of the qualities we naturally had as children fade over the years. We develop fears and limitations that hold us back from communicating at our best. But the good news? These six skills can be learned and they’ll make your life a whole lot easier.

#1. Say what you expect from others

Are you clear about your boundaries and standards? Do you let people know when enough is enough? What you find acceptable and what you don’t?

The more you communicate your expectations and limits, the less likely people are to test them. And let’s be honest others appreciate knowing where they stand with you. It’s a win-win!

#2. Share a bit more about yourself

We often hold back from expressing how we truly feel how someone’s actions affect us or what’s going on in our minds. But opening up, even just a little, can work wonders for your (work) relationships.

You’ll be surprised at the ripple effect: honesty encourages openness, making conversations more authentic and meaningful. So, don’t beat about the bush, discover the power of sharing.

#3. Address the ‘elephant in the room’

Sometimes, your intuition tells you there’s more going on with someone than they’re letting on. Many of us have learned to ignore this feeling, but avoiding it won’t lead to meaningful conversations.

Instead, voice your suspicion. Give the other person space to bring it to the table. You’ll be surprised how much deeper and more productive your conversation becomes.

#4. Check your assumptions

We’re quick to judge where others stand in a situation. But what if your conclusion is completely off the mark?

Always check your assumptions to be sure they’re accurate. You can simply ask, or better yet, summarise what the other person has said and confirm whether you’ve understood them correctly. It makes all the difference in clear and effective communication!

#5. Stop hammering your point, start listening

Be honest, how often have you had a discussion where arguments just kept going in circles, and you stopped really listening? Forcing your point rarely helps you get what you want.

Try a different approach. Listen actively and use the other person’s perspective to strengthen your own ideas. You’ll be surprised how much more effective your conversations become!

#6. Get Others on Board When Sharing Your Vision

Are you passionate about something but struggling to get others on the same page? The key is understanding your audience and connecting with them through shared goals. When people see how your vision aligns with their interests, they’ll be far more likely to get on board.
